What will happen during my initial appointment?
Our initial appointment will be about getting to know you and why you’ve come to see us. This includes taking a detailed history of your concerns, and learning how they affect you and if you’ve tried any treatment options before. We’ll then work together to form a treatment plan tailored to you. Depending on your comfort level and what your treatment plan involves, we may start that day or wait until your next session.
Initial appointment length: 45 min
Initial appointment length for complex/chronic conditions: 60 min
Follow-up appointment length: 30 min
What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is designed to address problems with the pelvic floor and is performed by a pelvic floor physiotherapist. A pelvic floor physiotherapist is a fully qualified physiotherapist with advanced training in pelvic floor conditions.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that look like a sling from the pubic bone to the tailbone. Their role is to:
- Support the pelvic floor
- Help with bladder and bowel control
- Help with sexual function
- Stabilise the pelvis and spine
If any of these aren’t working properly, it’s known as pelvic floor dysfunction. This may happen because of many reasons, including:
- Pelvic pain
- Lower back pain
- Pregnancy
- Childbirth
- Gynaecological surgery
- Menopause
- Constipation
- Obesity
- Ageing
- Inactivity
- Chronic coughing or lifting
- Muscle tension
In pelvic floor physiotherapy, your physiotherapist may use strategies like tailored exercise programs, education and helping you make lifestyle changes.
